From Anxiety to Achievement: A Selsey Employment Success Story

We all remember the daunting feeling of stepping out into the world of work for the first time. For many of our younger neighbours in Selsey, that transition from education to employment isn't just a simple step; it can feel like a mountain to climb.

Recently, we had the pleasure of working with a bright young man who reminded us that sometimes, all that is needed to unlock potential is a bit of guidance and a friendly face.

He had left college the previous year, qualifications in hand and a future full of promise. Yet, despite his hard work in the classroom, he found himself stuck. Like so many young people today, he was battling significant anxiety surrounding the job hunt. It wasn't a lack of ability holding him back; it was a lack of belief.

Breaking Down the Barriers

When he first came to Selsey Care Shop, the task of finding a job seemed overwhelming to him. We knew we needed to take things one step at a time.

He was introduced to our Employment Lead, Sue Boucher. Sue doesn't just look at CVs; she looks at people. Together, they sat down to unpick the process that had become so frightening for him. They started with the basics: crafting a CV that truly reflected his skills and setting up an account on Indeed to access local vacancies.

But we know that a piece of paper doesn't cure anxiety. We needed to build his confidence from the ground up.

The Power of Volunteering

At the Care Shop, we often champion volunteering not just as a way to help others, but as a way to help oneself. We discussed how volunteering could be a gentle bridge into the working world—a way to improve social interaction and build self-esteem without the immediate pressure of a paid role.

He was supported to attend the RSPB to gain valuable experience. This wasn't just about filling time; it was about proving to himself that he could turn up, contribute, and be a valued part of a team.

A Fantastic Result

With his confidence slowly growing and his practical tools in place, he began submitting job applications with our support. It was a rigorous process, but he was no longer facing it alone.

We are absolutely delighted to share that his determination paid off. After submitting multiple applications, he was offered a full-time position at a local pub.

Seeing him transform from a nervous young man into a gainfully employed member of our community has been a fantastic result for everyone involved. It is a powerful reminder that with the right "wrap-around" support—looking at emotional wellbeing alongside practical needs—we can help the next generation find their feet.
